Shoulder Replacement

The shoulder is made up of 3 bones named as humerus (arm bone), scapula (shoulder girdle bone) and clavicle (collarbone). If there is any trouble while making the movements or severe pain while using the shoulders, there are high possibilities of your shoulder bones getting affected. Wear and tear, arthritis, injury and overuse of the shoulder joint can lead to shoulder problems which makes the movements very difficult. The non-surgical treatments such as physiotherapy, medicines and rest may not cure the shoulder problems. A Shoulder Replacement Surgery might have to be performed if the medicines or keyhole surgeries fail to cure it. The artificial components called prosthesis is used to replace the damaged part of the shoulder. Since the shoulder is a ball-socket-joint, the replacement would be of the ball or both the ball and the socket.

The following are the types of shoulder replacement surgeries:

Hemi Shoulder Replacement: This is a shoulder replacement surgery wherein an artificial joint is attached with the broken humeral head and the fractured bone is reconstructed around the artificial joint. In this process, the humeral prosthesis takes place without actually replacing the socket (glenoid).

Total Shoulder Replacement: A metal ball is inserted at the arthritic surface of the ball and is pressed to fit the humerus. A high density polyethylene component is used to resurface the socket. The Total Shoulder Replacement must be performed by an experienced surgeon.

Reverse Shoulder Replacement: In Reverse Shoulder Replacement there is change in the placement of the metal ball. The metal ball is attached to the socket whereas the plastic cup is attached to the upper end of the humerus. This replacement is recommended for people who are suffering with rotator cuff tear or non functional.

Arthroscopic Surgery for shoulder problems:

Rotator Cuff Repairs: The Shoulder joint is supported by a group of four muscles and tendons known as the rotator cuff. These cuff helps in the shoulder movements and keeps the arm intact with the joints. There are high possibilities of the tendons getting torn due to trauma, fall, overuse or due to age factor. Thus, a rotator cuff repair is recommended. This surgery can be performed with a minimally invasive / arthroscopic surgery. Advantage being the patients hospitalization is very short 2-3 days and the post operative recovery is speedy with minimal operative scarring.
